#754 - Carpe

Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)

Japanese legend of the carp’s transformation into a dragon. While the carp traditionally symbolizes peace

of peacock blues and greens represents the vibrant energy and attitude of a young man striving for

personnel advancement a symbol of strength, and perseverance.

Diehl, Norma

#759 - Tea Blossoms

Location: 1st Floor, Center Hallway

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery: Japanese Embroidery

Artist Statement: This is a celebration of the Japanese tea camellia, known as tsubaki (Camellia japonica), a

flower that has been deeply cherished & woven into the cultural fabric of Japan for centuries. Often referred

to as the "Rose of Winter," the camellia is a symbol of unassuming elegance, resilience, and inner strength,

as it is one of the few blossoms to thrive and provide vibrant color during the coldest months of the year.

The composition is executed using traditional Japanese embroidery techniques, utilizing fine silk threads on

a silk ground fabric. To add depth and a hint of ethereal light, I have included a delicate sprinkling of gold

and silver threads within the background leaves and the flower centers. This medium allows for a unique

play of light, capturing the waxy luster of the camellia’s deep green leaves and the velvety texture of its

petals. The choice of a gold frame & fillet was intentional, designed to mirror the noble and refined status

the camellia holds in Japanese history—a flower once favored by samurai and high-ranking nobility. Central

to this piece is the flower’s role in the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu). Within the tranquil setting of a tea

room, a single, perfect camellia blossom is often chosen as the seasonal decoration, representing purity,

grace, & the fleeting beauty of the present moment. Through this embroidery, I aim to capture that sense of

quiet contemplation and the enduring spirit of a blossom that remains steadfast against the winter chill.

#882 - JR log-cabin-style pattern

Location: American History (1st Floor Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Cross-Stitch

Commercial Pattern/Designer: Mill Hill

Artist Statement: This piece captured my interest for the wonderful mix of colors (blues and dark reds) and

the opportunity to alter the center square by using my husband's and my initials in the center (instead of a

is worked in cotton floss and beading on perforated paper in dark reds and blues in a pattern similar to the

quilting pattern known as log cabin. The central square says "JR."
