  • New Exhibit at Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House Explores How a Small Northern Virginia Community Redefined Equality |Opening June 27, 2026
    On June 27, Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House will open a new exhibit Friends Gather Here: A Legacy of Two Communities at Woodlawn. This exhibit explores a bold experiment in equality initiated by Quaker abolitionists when they purchased Woodlawn and settled among a free Black community to build an antislavery society rooted in nonviolence. As part of the Virginia 250th commemoration, this exhibit highlights the parallel lives, shared aspirations, and evolving relationships between the Woodlawn Quakers and their free Black neighbors.

  • Historic Woodlawn to Host Its 63rd Annual Needlework Show | March 1 – 31, 2026
    Since 1963, Woodlawn has hosted the largest judged show of needle arts in the nation with hundreds of embroidery pieces on display from artists from all over the world. This year celebrates the 51st anniversary of Nelly’s Needlers, an all-volunteer corps who have contributed to the preservation of the site through the pursuit of fine needle art.

  • Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey Now Serve as a Food Collection and Distribution Site | November 17, 2025
    As of November 13, Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House will be a food collection and distribution center in response to the extreme need for food assistance we are seeing in our community. With the help of our partners and visitors, Woodlawn will provide non-perishable, shelf stable foods in waterproof food pantries outside our front gates at the Quaker Meeting House for people to access at any time and in our parking lot when we are open to the public.

  • New Program at Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House Commemorates the Close of the Marquis de Lafayette's 1824-1825 Farewell Tour of the United States | September 7, 2025
    On September 7, Woodlawn, a historic house in Alexandria, Virginia, which was originally part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will host a new event: Farewell to Lafayette: A Bicentennial Tribute. The program commemorates the close of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824-1825 Farwell Tour of America. In collaboration with the American Friends of Lafayette, this all-day event will honor Lafayette’s legacy at a site he visited during his celebrated visit to America.

    On May 1, Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House will open a new exhibit Saving Pope-Leighey House: How Marjorie Leighey Rescued Her Frank Lloyd Wright Home. The exhibit celebrates the life and work of Marjorie Leighey, the last private owner of the Pope-Leighey House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright house open to the public in the Washington, D.C. area.

    On April 25, Woodlawn, a historic house in Fairfax County, Virginia, which was originally part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will open two new exhibits: Woodlawn: People and Perspectives and Offerings for Tauxenent: Acknowledging Indigenous Place. Both exhibits are the work of research and collaboration with community partners, including descendants, to meaningfully reinterpret the site.
