#233 - Avice Tyndall
Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)
Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Molly Pitcher Stitchers
Category: Adapted Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Blackwork
Thread Count: 28
Artist Statement: I completed a brass rubbing of Avice Tyndall (1571)when I was in England many years
ago. Her elaborately embroidered petticoat reminded me of blackwork embroidery. I knew she had to be
stitched. I took it upon myself to recreate this design using blackwork, darning patterns and other stitches
with black and gold thread and the addition of some petite gold seed beads. What you see is my
interpretation of this lovely lady's brass rubbing found in the Thornbury Parish Church, Avon, England.

#692 - Take My Hand Through the Storm
Location: Beach Room (1st Floor, Music Room)
Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self
Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery: Crewel
Artist Statement: “Take My Hand Through the Storm” was inspired by attending a concert in Minneapolis
that combined original artwork with original music compositions. After 7 months of continual
embroidering, this is the end result. It took quite a lot of thinking as to how to attach the embroidery to
some surface, while figuring out how to get the driftwood attached, as well. The driftwood came from
Battery Park, DE and was an experience climbing over rocks to get the ‘right’ pieces.

#693 - Russian Fairy Tale
Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)
Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self
Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Canvaswork: Multi-Stitch (4+)
Commercial Pattern/Designer: “Russian Fairy Tale” is a design from Joan Thomassen and was served
during a class that occurred in 1999.
Artist Statement: “Russian Fairy Tale” was started by someone attending the class and then was put away
and never worked on again. 10% of the piece had been started and nothing else was completed. During our
Embroidery Chapter’s ‘stash’ sale, I bought the piece thinking it was going to be more like crewel
embroidery. However, upon examination, it was quite different than anything I had attempted before. Also,
there were no instructions included with the piece. Ms. Thomassen informed me that it was 25+ years ago
that the piece was created/taught and didn’t know if the instructions still existed. 3 weeks later, I received a
packet in the mail enclosing a copy of the manual. Then it took me all winter to research/learn the necessary
embroidery stitches to complete the piece. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire project for this piece, as I learned
a lot as well as a number of new stitches that I want to include into my next crewel pieces.

project to be a playable board at home - the monotony of it would sometimes mean I set it aside for long
periods - it probably took 5 years to actually complete it through on-and-off work! I gave it to my son, along
with a set of Monopoly money and game pieces. He had it durably framed so it could be used for playing.

surgeries, and after we almost lost her, I found this chart and started stitching it. Stitched the eyes first, and
they just penetrate and follow you however you look at it. Designer did phenomenal job on designing this. I
only changed a bit of the coloring to match her hair. I love having her front & center in our family room, now
that she's gone.

#665 - The Raven Queen
Location: Halloween Room (2nd Floor Landing)
Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self
Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Cross-Stitch
Thread Count: 28
Commercial Pattern/Designer: Mirabilia & Whispered by the Wind
Artist Statement: As a life long resident of Baltimore, I really wanted to pay homage to Edgar Allan Poe, as
the Mirabilia Chart spoke to me, and reminded me of the Poe home/grave, and the unknown annual visitor
to his grave. I used orange fabric (Orange is the Balto. Orioles color), and changed her gown to purple (Balto
Ravens colors). I used part of the Iron Gate/fencing from Whispered by the Wind chart, and modified to fit.
Added additional Ravens. Designed my own moon, and Clock Tower - replicating the Bromo Seltzer Clock
Tower in Balto. The only things I wasn't able to add was the Bottle of Cognac and Red Roses that the
midnight visitor brings each year. I had hoped to send to Rensel Framing and have them paint those on a
mat, but just couldn't bring myself to ship the piece across country, for fear of getting lost. Hope you enjoy! (
I had an offer of $5,000 from an antique dealer, but won't let this one go)
