represent South Carolina.

The main stitch was called curved smocking and it naturally made a more rounded scallops.

appealed to me most. It has a scooped back that is outlined with a smocked ruffle instead of a gathered

ruffle. That adds a bit more interest. I have a granddaughter that will grow into this soon and two others that

will inherit is when they get older. I love to pass my smocked clothing on to all the grands!

Artist Statement: This piece was inspired by a technique class taught by Julie Booth. I dyed the doily,

selected the background fabric, and chose a variety of embroidery and metallic threads of various weights.

Various embellishments I had in my stash of materials were utilized. Students were taught embroidery

stitching techniques and methods of attaching materials such as a rock to the piece. Tulle anchors the yarn

and doily in place, then embellishments and stitches were added.

Artist Statement: After initially, sketching out design with pencil, a coloring of that design was created.

Manipulating various layers throughout the design process and merging those layers together, I was able to

create 10 x 10 pattern squares to form the basis of the pattern. Once complete, symbol selection as well as

DMC color interface was added to complete the basis of the design.

Artist Statement: A tribute to one of my favorite authors acknowledging her 250th birthday. I was skeptical

of the colors at first and working the design with so many half motifs was unsettling. The longer I worked on

this piece the more I loved the way it looked. I was thrilled that I was able to have it framed just as I

envisioned. I made slight changes to the list of books as the designer included one not traditionally listed in

Jane’s publications.
