Location: Garden Room (1st Floor, Cream Parlor)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: In Stitches

Category: Original Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Sampler - Multi-Stitch (4+)

Thread Count: 40

Artist Statement: For the EGA ICC “Sample Family Tree” I applied my interest in hunting for designs to

18th century American sampler education. My selected patterns represent 4 styles popular in particular

areas of the colonies. It seems to be influenced by the teachers who worked in certain towns.

For my design I charted patterns from photographs of surviving American samplers in books and on the

internet and assembled them into a sampler.Bands are organized to provide a balanced mix of density and

colors. The text sections so common as a part of girlhood education are mostly my own favorites.

#109 - From Olde Modelbooks

Award: Second Place

Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: In Stitches

Category: Original Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Sampler - Multi-Stitch (4+)

Thread Count: 32

Artist Statement: The 13 designs in this Sampler were collected from European pattern books published

1527 to 1632. My study began in 1993 as research for teaching a class about 16th Century sampler designs

and techniques. As I found original charted designs I began to collect them. In 1997 I used a computer

program to chart my selection of designs and arranged them into the sampler you see.

My band selections were organized to provide a balanced mix of density and colors, not date of original

publication. All color choices were up to me as these books were not in color. A bit of the upper section was

stitched with two threads because in 1997 I did not know as much about stitching as I did when I found and

finished the piece in 2024-25.
