Award: Honorable Mention

Location: American History (1st Floor Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Total Framing

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Sampler - Traditional

Thread Count: 40

Commercial Pattern/Designer: With Thy Needle and Thread

Artist Statement: I started working on this piece in September 2020, on the 400th anniversary of the

Mayflower departing for the New World. I worked on it for exactly 2 years, finishing on the 402nd

anniversary in 2022. During the time I was stitching this piece, I read "The Women of the Mayflower and

Women of Plymouth Colony" by J.R.C. Noyes. This book was suggested by the designer of the cross stitch

pattern used for this piece. It was very meaningful to learn about the lives of these women during the

voyage, and after arriving in the New World, and to think about them as I stitched.

about half counted cross stitch over two threads and continental (tent stitch) over 1 thread. I attached two

small wooden accessories, a whisk and a ladle. The recipe booklet in white has paper pages in the center. It

may not show, but I wrote the names of French pastries in the recipe booklet.

Commercial Pattern/Designer: The Posy Collection, designer Barbara Bangser

Artist Statement: Having worked and met with Nelly’s Needlers in the Underwood Room for many years, I

wanted to create a bookmark design that looked like the molding in that room. I used Aida fabric that

matched the wall color. I deliberately used a fairly monochromatic color scheme to match the look of the

molding. The border of the bookmark is intended to reflect the dentil molding found in the Underwood

Room as well.

Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Cross-Stitch

Thread Count: 14

Commercial Pattern/Designer: Needle Maid

Artist Statement: Imported Chinese porcelain was a source of pride and status for families like the

Washingtons and the Lewises. Martha Washington left all of the "blew and white china in common use" at

Mount Vernon to her granddaughter Nellie Custis Lewis, and I believe that it was therefore in use at

Woodlawn during Nellie's residency there. I chose this piece to honor the family that lived at Woodlawn and

undoubtedly used China like this.

#633 - Whiteout

Location: Winter Room (1st Floor, Dining Room)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Canvaswork: Multi-Stitch (4+)

Artist Statement: After taking a 25 year hiatus from stitching and a Covid-induced stay at home, I picked up

a blank canvas and started stitching. After learning the basketweave, my first needlepoint teacher

encouraged me to experiment with different stitches. Thinking of dear Mrs. Pilling, I started with a

vengeance. Using a variety of stitches to create a Freeform, monochromatic piece using four shades of white. The patterns developed as I stitched.

#858 - Wild and Precious life

Award: Director's Award, Third Place

Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Artist Statement: Wild and Precious Life is an embroidered tribute to 100 women from history, myth,

fiction, culture, and my own life, inspired by Mary Oliver’s call to live fully and bravely. Through each stitch,

I honor courage, imagination, resistance, and care. Using a medium overlooked as "women's work", this

piece celebrates women who changed the world—and those who continue to shape it quietly—reminding us

that every life holds power, meaning, and possibility.

Hopkins, Rachel

#799 - Pride and Prejudice Sampler

Location: American History (1st Floor Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Cross-Stitch

Commercial Pattern/Designer: LinaOva

Artist Statement: For as long as I can remember, Pride and Prejudice has been one of my favorite novels-

Lizzie's wit, Darcy's difficulty in expressing his true emotion in words but not in deeds, the romance of their

meetings...not to mention the quote on this sampler! There's a reason people still fall in love with this book

over and over again. I knew I had to do a cross-stitch based on it, especially as Lizzie does needlepoint as

well, and there was something so meditative and about putting such a beloved story into a physical form.

While I stitched, I watched both the Keira Knightley film and the BBC miniseries, and listened to the

soundtrack of the former, so this piece has had me in an Austen state of mind for quite a while. I hope you

enjoy this piece, and maybe it will make you want to pick up the book again.

Horn, Sondra

#691 - North Carolina Pumpkin

Award: First Place

Location: Halloween Room (2nd Floor Landing)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Canvaswork: Multi-Stitch (4+)

Artist Statement: Done in a box finish format, my needlepoint piece is the state of North Carolina with

various stitches in each section. The canvas was painted, but the stitches and fibers selected were my own.

The orange fibers are stitched with "Splendor" silk thread. The outside area (white) motifs are stitched with

"Splendor" with the inside of each motif stitched with the new "Radiance", which gives it the shine. Each

selection of fibers were carefully chosen to add dimension. A bow was put at the top of the piece which is

what makes it 9" (wide) x 9" (high) 2" deep.

#649 - White work hand embroidered christening gown

Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Artist Statement: Whitework hand embroidered monograms on skirt of white long christening gown I made

for my three grandchildren with dates: 2009, 2011, 2014. My goal was to create a family heirloom

christening gown by monogramming initials and birth year of each of my three grandchildren around the

skirt, with room for additions of future births. I trimmed the gown with recycled lace from a garment found

in my great grandfather’s trunk, brought from England in 1900 when he immigrated to the US, thus

enhancing the gown’s heirloom quality.

Huntington, Anne

#586 - Sister Spheres

Location: Winter Room (1st Floor, Dining Room)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery: Termari

Artist Statement: 3 Temari balls demonstrate varying stitch complexities possible depending on how the ball

is divided. The white based ball is a simple 16 division, the dark is a simple 12, and the pink is a complex 8.

After preparing and marking the surfaces of the balls I combined a number of temari stitches, including

herringbone, square, trefold, diamonds zig-zag, interlock and binding stitches to make my designs. I chose

my colors intuitively, using 5/2 perle cotton yarns. I added an inconspicuous loop atop each ball for

hanging.
