Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Artist Statement: I am influenced by nature when creating fiber art. I use various subjects in nature such as

relaxed and I like to use my hands. While creating my current work I learned new stitches to embellish my

#103 - Tufted Coquette among Porterweed Plants

Location: Pets Room (2nd Floor, Blue Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: In Stitches

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Artist Statement: I began focusing on embroidering birds after a trip to a bird sanctuary located in the rain

forest of Trinidad’s Arima Valley. My father's family is from this valley. The challenge of trying to capture the

elegance and tranquility of rain forest birds has allowed me to focus anew my attention on surface texture

and color while memorizing my family's past. I wanted to create a 3D setting for this striking hummer by

placing it in the middleground of crisscrossing porterweed stalks.

#708 - Meow Manor

Location: Pets Room (2nd Floor, Blue Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Canvaswork: Multi-Stitch (4+)

Commercial Pattern/Designer: Feral Notions

Artist Statement: This is my first needlepoint piece ever. I saw a post from Feral Notions on Instagram

featuring a house purse, and was immediately interested in trying it out, participating in the Feral Notions

stitch-along. I modified the pattern slightly to include four cats instead of the original two. Each cat

represents the cats I've had in my life - Pumpkin (orange), Molly (black), Keely (gray), and my current cat,

Bea (also gray). I call the piece Meow Manor in their honor. I wanted to be as sustainable as possible, so the

materials were either materials I had at home or got at a thrift store. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this form of

needlework as much as I did, and I'm looking forward to making another house purse and exploring other

projects. Meow Manor is probably not the neatest piece I've ever created, but it's one of my favorite pieces. I

loved every minute of creating it.

#709 - The Kraken

Location: Beach Room (1st Floor, Music Room)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Commercial Pattern/Designer: PopLush Embroidery (her site is no longer active)

Artist Statement: I embroidered this piece in one day, November 6, 2024. I had worked as an election officer

the previous day for the 2024 election and was absolutely exhausted. I needed to do something to help me

focus on what was ahead, so I picked up a pattern I had from a designer called PopLush Embroidery (her

shop closed a few years ago). As I stitched the pattern, I felt like each object depicted - the ship, the wave,

and the kraken. Not only did the piece help me through that day, it inspired me and my friends to create a

monthly craft/art meetup to create community and create together. I think of my friends every time I look at

this piece. It's one of my favorites.

#662 - Gidget The Beach Poodle

Location: Beach Room (1st Floor, Music Room)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Canvaswork: Multi-Stitch (4+)

Commercial Pattern/Designer: Krissy Mast

Artist Statement: I was drawn to this poodle from the moment I saw her. Maybe it was aspirational, but I

love the image of this poodle doing her thing on the beach (I also rescue poodles, so it didn’t hurt to see a

poodle living her best life!) As I stitched her, I struggled for awhile to come up with a name, until one day,

after several weeks of stitching, I settled on the name Gidget. While the original Gidget is a carefree, teenage surfer, I felt Gidget’s carefree attitude applied to this poodle as well! The large canvas was also an

opportunity to play with some stitches and thread mixing. I mixed different shades of DMC floss to create

texture in the sand, and used a combination of long and short stitches in Fuzzy Stuff to give Gidget her

texture.
