Fink, Ann

#543 - Jacobean Design 18

Award: Third Place

Location: 1st Floor, Center Hallway

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Commercial Pattern/Designer: Hazel Blomkamp

Artist Statement: This piece was done through an on-line EGA course. It was quite difficult to do because of

the intricacy of the details in the design. I had great satisfaction in working on it. This piece is stitched in the

manor of wool crewel work, but using cotton and silk threads and beads. The design is an overall floral

pattern in multiple colors.

Fink, Ann

#544 - Stash Bird

Award: Honorable Mention

Location: Pets Room (2nd Floor, Blue Bedroom)

Division: Senior (70 years and up) | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery: Crewel

Artist Statement: This piece is based on Hazel Blomkamp's "Kevin" (a pheasant). Instead of using the

materials specified, I went rogue and used what I had on hand, including the fabric, itself. While keeping the

spirit of the piece, I changed colors and a few stiches here and there. He is one of my favorite pieces.

Fitzgerald, Maggie

#889 - Tree of Gondor

Location: International Room (2nd Floor, Pink Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Cross-Stitch

Thread Count: 32

Commercial Pattern/Designer: CrossStitchForYou

Artist Statement: This was created as a wedding gift for my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and it draws

from The Lord of the Rings to reflect themes of commitment, endurance, and shared story. At its center is

the crowned White Tree of Gondor, a symbol of renewal, continuity, and hope. The tree is encircled by the

Riddle of the Strider, shown in the Black Speech of Mordor. These words are most often associated with

domination, but here they are reframed through the lens of unity and promise. By pairing the White Tree

with the language of the One Ring, the piece acknowledges that love and partnership exist within a world

that contains darkness as well as light. Marriage, like Tolkien’s epic, is not about the absence of struggle, but

about choosing loyalty, care, and perseverance despite it. The act of wrapping the tree in text suggests

protection rather than imprisonment: a bond that surrounds, connects, and endures. Counted cross stitch is

a slow, intentional process, and each stitch was placed with the time and attention one gives to a lasting

relationship. As a handmade object created for a specific moment and person, the work celebrates the way

stories become intertwined with ritual, memory, and love.

#844 - Jamestown Thimble

Location: American History (1st Floor Bedroom)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Artist Statement: I’ve been exploring the history of souvenir thimbles as well as my own relationship with

the thimble collection that was started for me as a child by rendering a selection of them one stitch at a time

in thread. This is the twelfth finish piece of this series. I find it humorous to make the image of a thimble,

knowing none of my 53 thimbles are suited to the job of actually “working” as a thimble while I do the job.

#845 - As Many As It Takes

Location: Winter Room (1st Floor, Dining Room)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery: Termari

Artist Statement: Over the past five years I’ve been obsessed with the art of temari. One night I finished one

and my husband asked “how many are you going to make?” My response, without thinking, was “as many as

it takes.” I started thinking about what that meant: was it as many as it takes to get them right? As many as

it takes to make sure I have enough to gift each Christmas? As many as it takes to satisfy the urge to create

them? This piece represents the deep love I have for temari as an art and a hobby.
