#796 - Riptide

Award: First Place

Location: Beach Room (1st Floor, Music Room)

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Self

Category: Original Design | Technique: Surface Embroidery

Artist Statement: The ocean is the most powerful symbol of the unseen, the unknown, and the unknowable.

There is no place where I feel more connected to the world around me than by the ocean. The broad expanse

of the shoreline awes me with my own insignificance and impermanence. At the same time, the ocean

grounds me in my body, connecting me physically to the whole world around me, the tide threatens to pull

my mind and my spirit into the cosmos, till the limits of outer space. Barely visible stitches show the

movement of the ocean in many directions, and conveys the strength of the tide which could pull the viewer

in.

Division: Adult | Exhibited by: Total Framing

Category: Commercial Design | Technique: Counted Thread: Cross-Stitch

Thread Count: 32

Commercial Pattern/Designer: Crocette a gogo

Artist Statement: This design brought back the feelings of nostalgia and patriotism from my childhood. In

1976, I was a young girl taking in all the celebrations around me. Fifty years later, I appreciate even more

the meaning of our American Semiquincentennial. My family descends from Colonial families who came to

this country as early as the 1640s. Later generations served our country in the American Revolution, Civil

War, and my Uncle Charles Zepp even gave his last full measure.

I'm thrilled to be celebrating America's 250th and hope this needlework is passed down through our family

to recognize this period in our nation's history. This is an American Semiquincentennial Sampler . I made

slight design modifications by stitching America & wreath in gold plus adding 250 to vase. Design has Eagles

with Shields, Columbia & Uncle Sam. I added more gold accents for the Semiquincentennial added the 250

on the vase. Self taught, this piece brought me so much joy in its making.
