Support Preservation

Donations help us fund preservation projects, reflecting an important truth: preservation is not simply about repairing what has aged. It is the careful, ongoing work of ensuring that future generations can experience the architecture, collections, and stories that define Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House.

Current PReservation projects

As part of ongoing preservation efforts at Woodlawn, the previously installed non-historic exterior shutters have been replaced.

Preservation of the Pope-Leighey House’s exterior cypress is being completed through a two-phase maintenance plan. Phase one of cleaning the exterior with a D2 solution has been completed. Phase two will include reconditioning and sealing the wood.

Recent PReservation

Thanks to grant funding by The Alexandria Association, the citizen preservation society founded in 1932, Woodlawn was able to restore the gable soffit, frieze, and north side entry porch.

Thanks to a Collections Grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the signature Quaker quilt donated by Susan Hellman was able to be conserved.

While generally stable, the quilt required targeted conservation to ensure its long-term preservation and safe exhibition.
