2022 Virtual Needlework Events

Recordings

In March of 2022, we were lucky to have several guests give virtual lectures as part of our Needlework Show. Below are recordings of three of those programs. Whether viewing them for the first time, or as a repeat, we hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

African American Needlework in the Colonial and Antebellum South

The one subject essential to any discussion of embroidery in a southern context is the contributions of enslaved and free Africans and those of African descent, both as students and as a work force. The richest evidence for these activities is found in documents detailing the activities of enslaved females in Charleston and the surviving embroideries of and records for free African Americans in Baltimore. Join Kathy Staples, independent scholar and author, as she explores this often overlooked but essential research.

Shared Sampler Threads

Join independent needlework researcher and author, Barbara Hutson, as she discusses the history and craft of samplers from around the globe, with a special focus on samplers from Virginia, Maryland, and Quaker schools and the stories they tell.

Passing on the Tradition of Needlearts: Community Conversation

Who inspired you to begin crafting and fostered your love of needlework? Whether you come from a long line of stitchers or took your first class last week, you can probably answer that question, and it ties you to our needlework community, past and present. In honor of that story and in the spirit of this year’s Needlework Show theme, Common Threads, we and our guests shared our connections and stories of needlework.
